Timeline

Foundation

Hyperliquid's history in dated events, from the 2023 points programme through HYPE, the HyperEVM and HIP-3 to permissionless HIP-4 deployment in 2026, each with its source.

Only dates a source supports are listed, at the precision the source gives. In the Source column:

  • “docs” is the official documentation.
  • “chain” is a read of mainnet itself: a token’s creation time, a market’s first daily candle, or a block timestamp.
  • “press report” is contemporary news coverage.
  • “deployer records” is the dated history (commits, logs, release notes) of a production HIP-4 deployer.

A market’s first daily candle dates its first trade, not its announcement. The launch of the Hyperliquid L1 itself has no date in the docs or in any chain read used here, so it is left out rather than guessed.

The team did proprietary market making in crypto first; what it saw in DeFi (poor market design, weak technology, clumsy interfaces) is the problem Hyperliquid set out to fix. See why Hyperliquid runs on its own chain.

Date Event Source
2020 The team later known as Hyperliquid Labs does proprietary market making in crypto docs: about-hyperliquid/core-contributors
Summer 2022 The team expands into DeFi docs: about-hyperliquid/core-contributors
2023 HyperCore vaults launch; the docs now call them legacy vaults docs: hypercore/vaults

Points rewarded early activity; both programmes have ended.

Date Event Source
Up to 2023-10-31 Closed alpha; points are later distributed for this period too docs: points
2023-11-01 The points programme begins: 1,000,000 points a week for 6 months. Affiliates earn 1 point for every 4 their referred users earn; weeks end Wednesdays at 00:00 UTC and points are paid on Thursdays docs: points
2024-05-01 The first points programme ends docs: points
2024-05-01 to 2024-05-28 Activity in this gap later earns a points multiplier docs: points
2024-05-29 The L1 phase of points begins: 700,000 points a week docs: points
November 2024 The L1 phase of points ends docs: points

Tokens, the HyperEVM and HIP-3: 2024 and 2025

Section titled “Tokens, the HyperEVM and HIP-3: 2024 and 2025”

Between 2024 and late 2025 the spot side, the native token, the second execution environment and builder-deployed perps all went live. The pillars they added are on the house of finance.

Date Event Source
2024-04-16 PURR/USDC, spot pair 0, starts trading. PURR is token 1, the first native token after USDC chain: first daily candle; spotMeta
2024-05-16 The first HIP-1 token deployed by an outside deployer is created: HFUN, token 2. Tokens 3 to 7 follow within ten days chain: tokenDetails deploy times
2024-11-29 HYPE is created at 06:45 UTC as token 150, with genesis balances for 94,023 addresses, and HYPE/USDC starts trading the same day chain: tokenDetails; first daily candle
2025-02-18 The HyperEVM produces block 1, at 03:36:20 UTC chain: HyperEVM block 1
2025-09-24 USDH/USDC starts trading chain: first daily candle
2025-10-13 The first HIP-3 perp dex market starts trading. On 2026-11-03, 10 HIP-3 dexes were registered and 9 had traded chain: first daily candles; perpDexs

HIP-4 went from announcement to permissionless mainnet deployment in under seven months. Deploying under it: becoming an outcome deployer.

Date Event Source
2026-02-02 Hyperliquid announces HIP-4, outcome markets press report
2026-03-10 HIP-4 opens on testnet deployer records
2026-05-02 HIP-4 launches on mainnet. The first market is a recurring BTC binary outcome that settles daily at 06:00 UTC on the HyperCore mark price; multi-outcome markets are not part of the initial release press report; docs: HIP-4
About 2026-06-06 The HIP-4 quote asset switches from USDH to USDC. Before the switch, depositing meant a USDC transfer plus a USDH spot buy deployer records
2026-07-20 Hyperliquid announces permissionless HIP-4 deployment. The specification published then calls for 500,000 HYPE locked for 6 months, slashable for bad markets, wrong settlement or settlement more than a week late press report; deployer records
2026-07-31 Permissionless HIP-4 deployment opens on testnet. The release rules out disputes, bonds, overturns and slashing for late settlement on testnet deployer records
2026-08-29 Permissionless HIP-4 deployment goes live on mainnet, from validator-approved templates press report
September 2026 Support for outcome markets in CoreWriter (action 17) and the read precompiles (outcomeStatus at 0x814, outcome ids accepted by 0x801 and 0x808) is confirmed deployer records; docs: interacting-with-hypercore
